Charlie Bender Scholarship Proposal
September 17, 2007

Dr. Charlie Bender served as the first chairman of the Coalition of Academic Supercomputing Centers (CASC) as the organization was originally known, and was instrumental in creating the organization.

As we approach the 20th year of our existence, it seems fitting that we honor Charlie’s efforts and commitment to HPC with the establishment of a scholarship to provide support for 1 or 2 computational chemistry students to attend the annual Supercomputing meeting.

The following criteria for the scholarship have been proposed:

  1. The target group of participants are computational chemistry student(s) who are interested in pursuing a career in computational chemistry and who will use this meeting to advance their career
  2. One or two students a year will be funded
  3. We estimate the overall cost to support two students will be about $4,000 a year which covers the cost of registration, reimbursement of travel and hotel and a modest stipend (based on federal per diem for each meeting location)
  4. Scholarships will be awards based on committee review of student applications – we propose setting up an alias on our website so that students can submit a statement which:
    1. Describe the potential impact that attending this meeting will provide to the applicant
    2. Provide a paragraph or two about the applicant’s research plans
    3. Provide a brief letter of support from the applicant’s advisor or a faculty member in support of the applicant’s application
    4. The CASC Executive Committee will review applications and recommend the award(s), based on the criteria of judgment of which applicants’ careers will be most beneficially affected by this award.

The Charlie Bender Scholarship will be supported by the Charlie Bender Endowment which will be funded with funds solicited from the community. Funds will be provided by CASC until the endowment has sufficient funds to support the scholarship.

The first award will be made in 2008, with the program to be announced at SC07.

Advertising/announcements of the scholarship will be made utilizing the SCxx newsletter, the SCxx student contact lists, HPC Wire and the CASC newsletter itself.
